Hardware Requirements

Server

Microsoft® SQL-Server 2000® is the required database engine behind Agware software. Agware ships with a server install program. This program creates the necessary Agware SQL-Server database files on your server. Any PC can be used as a server; however, the computer acting as the server must be a dedicated server (this means that the server computer is NOT used by an end-user). The computer acting as the server must meet or exceed the following requirements:

CPU

Pentium IV 800 MHz or higher

Memory 512 MB of RAM or higher
Disk 2 Gigabytes of free space on the drive holding the database
Operating System Microsoft Windows 2000® Server or higher

Client-PC

The client PC represents the computer workstation that runs Agware for an end-user. The Agware client program will actually run on any PC running a Windows 32-bit operating system. However, we find the following system requirements enable Agware to perform sufficiently:

CPU Pentium III 450 MHz or higher (Pentium IV or higher is recommended)
Memory 256 MB of RAM or higher
Disk 1 Gigabyte free space to install the client program
Operating System

Microsoft Windows XP Professional®

NOTE: We do not support earlier Windows versions. "Home" versions, such as Microsoft® Windows ME, are not suitable for the purpose of running Agware.

Network

While Agware can be operated as a standalone program for a single user on an isolated PC, Agware was designed to ensure that it also supports sharing by multiple users. This requires a local network infrastructure. The network architecture is independent of the Agware system. The network topology only needs to be supported by the Microsoft Windows operating system for it to work with Agware. The most common network topology today is Ethernet. A 10 MB Ethernet local area network is quite common, however, a Fast Ethernet (100 MB) LAN will provide more bandwidth for those companies that have a large number of Agware users.

Internet Connection

Although an Internet connection is not required to use the Agware system, there are several features of the system that use an Internet connection. There are many options available on the market today for your company's Internet connection.

A high speed connection is required, however, for Franwell to provide remote support. This is especially beneficial for receiving on-going updates.

Any company connecting multiple PCs on a network to the Internet should do so using a high-speed connection.

Remote Access

Microsoft® Windows 4.0 Terminal Server® Edition and the entire Windows 2000-2003 and .NET® server family have built-in remote terminal service capability. Terminal service enables a remote user to use the Agware system from virtually anywhere in the world. When a user is connected remotely, that user is actually running Agware on the server, but the program appears to be running locally. This is accomplished by the terminal server passing screen, mouse and keyboard data from the server back to the remote computer. An additional benefit of remote access is more timely and efficient technical support in the event there is a problem.

Data Backups

It is the responsibility of clients to insure their own data. Franwell, Inc. does NOT maintain data storage for clients. There are a number of ways to maintain backups for the safekeeping of your company's records. A server with a backup tape is only as secure as the user operating it. If backups are NOT made and removed from the premises on a regular basis, and then something catastrophic occurs that destroys the server, your business is at a virtual standstill. Some people prefer to pay for off site data storage; that is an individual preference and Franwell makes no recommendations regarding those who offer such services. We know that hard drives do occasionally crash and no one should risk losing their operational data. Franwell will provide a new Agware database, but it will be empty.
